ENSEMBLE

The ‘John Clare’ Series

I have written several works inspired by the life and work of John Clare, the romantic ‘peasant’ poet of the early nineteenth century. The series includes a trilogy of orchestral pieces, works for ensemble, and for voice and ensemble.

Part II of “… the margin of eternity…” series.

(in memoriam Duncan Bush)

Premiered Trio Casals in May 2015 at West Chester University, and Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Halls, NY, and subsequently recorded for Navona Records (USA).

Attending an exhibition of Rembrandt’s paintings, I was particularly impressed and absorbed by the self-portraits that he painted throughout his life, and then by the way that painting can portray such personal matters while music cannot. My thoughts also turned to the way that Howard Hodgkin could express personal circumstances in his work. I gave myself the challenge of doing the same in music, in pieces no longer than five minutes and for small ensemble.
